Rafael haLeví's son Masliach emigrated to the United States, with his wife, MazalTó (Mazal Tov) from Monastir. Here, they settled among countrymen on the Lower East Side of Manhattan. Masliach was a life-long active and prominent member of the Congregation Peace and Brotherhood of Monastir in the "old Kehila" on Eldridge Street.
He acted as the "Sammas" of the synagogue, often arriving first and leaving last, and maintaining the bowl of oil in which the memorial lights were floated. On holidays, he was the auctioneer. This entailed making circuits of the synagogue singing out "Cuanto dan para ---?" (How much would you give for ---). This was done repeatedly for each honor being auctioned off.
